This video tackled the 1946 naval uprising, usually called the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny or Revolt, began on 18 February 1946 when Indian ratings at HMIS Talwar in Bombay struck over food, service conditions, racial discrimination, and broader political grievances. It quickly spread to other ships and shore establishments and became one of the most dramatic challenges to British authority in late colonial India. What happened: The protest started as a hunger strike and slow-down, then escalated into a coordinated uprising involving thousands of sailors across Bombay and other ports. Rebel ships hoisted the tricolour and, in some cases, other political flags, signaling both anti-colonial unity and the charged politics of the moment. Why it mattered: The uprising mattered because it showed that colonial rule was no longer secure even inside the armed forces. It also revealed the depth of anger over racism and poor conditions, while exposing the limits of British control in the final phase before independence. In this video Swareena Singh talks to Commander Vipin Sharma (retd.) on the book his father, late veteran G. D. Sharma, wrote called Deck to Dawn – Naval Mutiny of 1946.
